What is Cognitive Load Theory?

And why is it important to your business?

The Essence of CLT

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) explains how the limited capacity of working memory affects how a person performs and learns. Because we can only process a small amount of new information at once, unnecessary mental work causes cognitive overload, which can hinder the performance of staff.

Cognitive Overload actively reduces capacity to deal with workload, increases stress levels and negatively affects the way we make decisions.

CLT tells us that to avoid cognitive overload affecting performance, work activities, processes and training should be designed to work within the boundaries of the working memory.

It is possible to improve productivity by designing work places to reduce cognitive overload and therefore improve efficiency.
